Understanding Liposuction

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a body-contouring procedure that removes unwanted fat from specific areas using a gentle suction technique. It is not a weight-loss operation; instead, it shapes and sculpts areas resistant to diet and exercise.

  • Common treatment areas:

    • Abdomen and waist

    • Hips and flanks

    • Thighs

    • Back and bra-line

    • Arms

    • Knees

    • Male chest (gynecomastia)

  • Who benefits most?

Liposuction is ideal for those who:

    • Have localised fat deposits

    • Are close to a healthy weight

    • Have good skin elasticity

    • Want contouring rather than dramatic weight change

  • What liposuction cannot do:

    • Treat obesity

    • Tighten loose skin

    • Replace healthy lifestyle habits

For patients with more significant skin laxity, liposuction may be combined with procedures such as tummy tuck, arm lift or thigh lift.

Tailored Care for Every Patient

During your consultation, Mr Mistry will:

  • Discuss your goals and areas of concern

  • Assess your skin quality, fat distribution and overall body proportions

  • Explain the types of liposuction available (traditional, power-assisted, or laser-assisted, depending on suitability)

  • Review your medical history to ensure the procedure is safe for you

  • Show examples of expected outcomes

  • Create a personalised treatment plan based on your anatomy and aesthetic goals

Every body is unique, and so is every liposuction plan. The technique, areas treated and volume of fat removed are all customised for a balanced, natural result.

Liposuction Procedure

How liposuction works:

  1. Anaesthesia - Liposuction is usually performed under general anaesthesia. In some cases, smaller areas may be treated under local anaesthesia with sedation.

  2. Marking and planning - Before surgery, Mr Mistry marks the treatment areas to guide precise contouring.

  3. Tumescent fluid infiltration - A specialised fluid containing local anaesthetic and adrenaline is injected to minimise bruising and improve comfort.

  4. Fat removal - Small incisions are made in discreet locations. A fine cannula (thin tube) is inserted to gently loosen and remove fat using suction. Techniques may include:

    • Traditional liposuction

    • Power-assisted liposuction (PAL)

    • Laser-assisted liposuction, if appropriate

  5. Sculpting and shaping - Mr Mistry refines the area to ensure smooth, even contours.

  6. Closure and dressing - The small incisions are closed (often with dissolvable stitches) and covered. A compression garment is applied to support healing.

Duration

Liposuction typically takes 1–3 hours depending on the number of areas treated.

Recovery and Aftercare

Immediately after surgery

  • You will wear a compression garment to reduce swelling and support tissues

  • Light walking is encouraged to improve circulation

  • Expect mild discomfort, swelling and bruising

First 1–2 weeks

  • Most patients return to work after 5–10 days

  • Swelling gradually decreases

  • Continue to wear your compression garment as advised

  • Avoid strenuous activity

Weeks 3–6

  • Gradual return to exercise

  • Bruising should resolve

  • Contours begin to improve visibly

Long-term

  • Final results are typically seen at 3–6 months

  • Fat cells removed during liposuction do not return

  • Weight management helps maintain your new shape
