Ganglion Cyst Removal
A ganglion cyst is a fluid-filled lump that most commonly appears on the wrist or hand. While often harmless, a ganglion cyst can cause pain, discomfort, and restricted movement - especially if it presses on a nearby nerve or tendon.
Mr Rikki Mistry, Consultant Plastic Surgeon, offers expert ganglion cyst removal at private clinics in East Grinstead, Chatham and Tunbridge Wells.

What is a Ganglion Cyst?
A ganglion cyst is a non-cancerous, fluid-filled sac that develops near a joint or tendon, most commonly on the wrist. Wrist ganglion cysts - particularly on the back of the wrist - are the most common soft tissue lumps in the hand and wrist. They can also appear on the inside of the wrist, the fingers, or the palm.
A ganglion cyst typically feels like a firm, smooth lump that may be tender when pressed. Common signs include:
-
A hard lump on the wrist - which may feel like bone
-
A painful or aching lump on the wrist or hand
-
A lump that changes size over time
-
Tingling or weakness if the cyst is pressing on a nerve
-
Restricted wrist movement or discomfort during activity
Many patients worry when they notice a lump on the wrist. While a ganglion cyst is benign, it is always worth having any new lump assessed by a specialist to confirm the diagnosis.
Ganglion Cyst Excision surgery - What to expect
Ganglion cyst removal surgery (excision) involves removing the cyst along with its root attachment to the joint or tendon sheath. This reduces the risk of the cyst returning compared to aspiration (draining) alone.
Mr Mistry performs ganglion cyst excision as a day-case procedure under local anaesthetic. The procedure is typically straightforward, and most patients return home the same day.

FAQ: Ganglion Cyst Removal
Is a ganglion cyst dangerous?
No. A ganglion cyst is a benign, non-cancerous lump. It poses no risk of becoming cancerous and is not dangerous to your health. However, any new lump on the wrist or hand should be assessed by a specialist to confirm the diagnosis, as not all lumps in this area are ganglion cysts.
Will a ganglion cyst go away on its own?
Some ganglion cysts do resolve spontaneously without any treatment, particularly smaller ones. However, many persist for years or gradually increase in size. If the cyst is causing pain, restricting movement or pressing on a nerve, waiting for it to resolve on its own is unlikely to be the most practical approach. Your surgeon can advise based on the size and location of your cyst.
What is the difference between aspiration and surgical removal?
Aspiration involves draining the fluid from the cyst using a needle. It is a quick procedure but has a high recurrence rate because the root attachment to the joint or tendon sheath remains in place. Surgical excision removes the cyst along with its root, which significantly reduces the chance of it coming back. Mr Mistry performs excision surgery for this reason.
Will the ganglion cyst come back after surgery?
Surgical excision carries a lower recurrence rate than aspiration alone. When the cyst is removed together with its stalk and root attachment, the risk of recurrence is considerably reduced. A small proportion of patients do experience a recurrence, which can be treated again if needed.
How long does recovery from ganglion cyst surgery take?
Most patients can use the hand for light activities within a few days of surgery. The wound typically heals within two weeks. Full recovery, including return of normal wrist movement and strength, usually takes four to six weeks. Your surgeon will advise on when you can return to work and resume specific activities depending on what your job or hobbies involve.
Is ganglion cyst removal surgery painful?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, so you will not feel pain during the operation. Afterwards, there is typically mild to moderate soreness around the wound for a few days, which is managed with standard pain relief such as paracetamol. Most patients find the discomfort very manageable.
Is ganglion cyst removal covered by private health insurance?
Yes, in most cases. Ganglion cyst removal is covered by the majority of private health insurers when the cyst is symptomatic, causing pain, or affecting hand function. Mr Mistry is fee assured, meaning he charges within your insurer's benefit limits, so there are no unexpected additional fees for patients with Bupa, Vitality, Aviva, AXA, WPA and other major insurers.
