Basal Cell Carcinomas

What is a Basal Cell Carcinoma?

A Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) is a slow growing low grade skin cancer. It originates in the basal cells-small, round cells found in the lower part of the epidermis (outer skin layer).

It typically develops in sun-exposed areas such as the face, ears, neck, scalp, shoulders, and back.

  • A sore that doesn't heal or bleeds easily

  • A scar-like area with poorly defined borders

  • A bump with rolled edges and central ulceration

Risk Factors & Prevention

Several factors increase the likelihood of developing BCC:

  • Chronic sun exposure or use of tanning beds

  • Fair skin, light hair, and light eyes

  • Increasing age, particularly over 50

  • Previous history of skin cancer

  • Weakened immune system

  • Genetic predispositions, such as Basal Cell Nevus Syndrome

While not all cases can be avoided, these strategies can reduce your risk:

  • Use broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) daily

  • Wear protective clothing and wide-brimmed hats

  • Avoid sun exposure during peak hours (10am-4pm)

  • Avoid tanning beds

  • Regularly check your skin for any changes and seek medical advice for suspicious lesions
