Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

If loose skin, weakened abdominal muscles or stubborn lower-tummy fullness are affecting your comfort or confidence, you may be considering an abdominoplasty. Pregnancy, weight changes and ageing can all stretch the abdominal tissues in ways that exercise alone cannot fully improve.

Mr Rikki Mistry, a highly regarded Consultant Plastic Surgeon specialising in body contouring and reconstructive surgery, provides skilled surgical care and personalised support to help you regain a firmer, flatter and more confident abdominal shape.

Understanding Abdominoplasty

An abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is a procedure that reshapes the abdomen by removing excess skin and fat while tightening weakened or separated abdominal muscles.

Why people choose a tummy tuck

An abdominoplasty is ideal for patients who:

  • Have loose or overhanging abdominal skin

  • Experience muscle separation (diastasis recti), often after pregnancy

  • Have stubborn lower-abdominal fullness despite exercise

  • Want a flatter, firmer abdominal contour

  • Experience rashes or discomfort from excess skin folds

What a tummy tuck does not do

  • It is not a weight-loss procedure

  • It does not replace core strengthening

  • It may not remove all stretch marks (only those within removed skin)

Types of abdominoplasty

  • Full Abdominoplasty: Tightens muscles and removes excess skin across the full abdomen

  • Mini Tummy Tuck: Targets loose skin and bulges below the belly button

  • Extended Abdominoplasty: Ideal after significant weight loss, addressing the waist and flanks

Mr Mistry will recommend the right technique based on your body, goals and the result you want to achieve.

Tailored Care for Every Patient

During your consultation, Mr Mistry will:

  • Take time to understand your goals and concerns

  • Assess your abdominal muscles, skin quality and fat distribution

  • Discuss whether you are best suited to full, mini or extended abdominoplasty

  • Review your medical history and lifestyle factors

  • Explain expected results, recovery timelines and scar placement

  • Create a personalised plan that prioritises both safety and aesthetic outcome

This tailored approach ensures each patient receives a result that complements their natural shape and provides long-lasting confidence.

Abdominoplasty Procedure

How the procedure works:

  1. Anaesthesia - Abdominoplasty is performed under general anaesthetic for your comfort.

  2. Incision placement - A low horizontal incision is made along the bikini line, where it can sit discreetly beneath underwear or swimwear.

  3. Muscle tightening - If the abdominal muscles have separated (diastasis recti), they are repaired and tightened to restore core support.

  4. Removal of excess skin and fat - Loose or overhanging skin is removed. Stubborn fat deposits may be treated with liposuction for smoother contouring.

  5. Repositioning the belly button - In a full abdominoplasty, the navel is repositioned to a natural-looking location.

  6. Closure and dressing - Absorbable stitches are used, and dressings or surgical glue are applied. A supportive abdominal garment is fitted.

Length of surgery

Most abdominoplasty procedures take 2–3 hours depending on complexity and whether liposuction is combined.

Recovery and Aftercare

Immediately after surgery

  • You’ll wake up wearing a supportive garment

  • Walking is encouraged early to reduce the risk of clots

  • Expect tightness, swelling and some discomfort — this is normal and managed with medication

The first 1–2 weeks

  • You may need to walk slightly bent at the waist initially

  • Most patients return to desk-based work after 10–14 days

  • Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities

  • Continue wearing your support garment as instructed

Weeks 3–6

  • Swelling gradually subsides

  • You may return to light exercise

  • Scars begin to settle

  • Core movements should still be limited

After 6 weeks

  • Most normal activities can be resumed

  • Results become more visible

  • Scars continue to fade over several months

Long-term results

A tummy tuck offers long-lasting improvement when supported by a stable weight and healthy lifestyle.
